* For your first visit to the dentist, it is better to have a friend or relative to accompany you. Much better if they have no fear of the dentist so they could sit beside you during the treatment.
* While having a treatment, find something to distract you to divert your attention. Listen to music on your headphones, watch tv (if available in the treatment room), or find other distractions just to keep your focus away from the ongoing treatment.
* Try controlled breathing or other relaxation techniques. It will help slow your heartbeat and relax your muscles. Progressive muscle relaxation is another technique you could also try.
* Ask your dentist if they have sedatives available and which ones appropriate. Several options include local anesthetic, laughing gas or nitrous oxide, oral sedatives, and more. Oversedation can be dangerous, most dentist are uncomfortable with oral sedatives.
* If you can’t really bring yourself to a dentist, you might want to try and see a psychologist first. It is a very effective approach to treat phobias to dentist.
